Current smoking at the time of diagnosis is associated with an increased risk for all-cause mortality among Black women diagnosed with breast cancer, according to a study published online Jan. 24 in JAMA Network Open. Nur Zeinomar, Ph.D., from the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick, and colleagues examined the association of prediagnostic cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption with all-cause mortality and breast cancer-specific mortality. The analysis included 1,926 Black breast cancer survivors identified from the New Jersey State Cancer Registry.

Half of the study participants had sleep apnea. These scans found that participants with sleep apnea had significantly lower bone-mineral density than the participants without the condition. “While the link between obstructive sleep apnea and low bone-mineral density has yet to be fully explored, this study offers new evidence on their connection that could have several implications for orthodontic treatment,” Al-Jewair said in a university news release. Metformin, promising adjuvant therapy for breast cancer treatment in obese postmenopausal women
The study found that metformin exerts anti-cancer activity by decreasing the circulating insulin, leptin, and estradiol. In this context, Aya Ahmed El-attar from Tanta University in Tanta, Egypt, and colleagues aimed to evaluate the effect of metformin as an adjuvant therapy to letrozole on estradiol and other biomarkers involved in the breast cancer pathogenesis of breast cancer among overweight and obese postmenopausal women in an open-labelled parallel pilot study.
