Sleep Disruption Linked to Lower Quality of Life in Children
HealthDay News — Sleep disruption is associated with reduced health-related quality of life for children, according to a study published online March 15 in JAMA Network Open. During the sleep restriction week, children went to sleep 64 minutes later and wake time was 18 minutes later, resulting in 39 minutes less of total sleep per night. The researchers found that with sleep restriction, both parents and children reported significantly less sleep disturbance at night, with a reduction in the number of awakenings and wake after sleep onset and a small improvement in sleep efficiency.

Losing just 39 minutes of sleep can impact kids, so how can we help?
A new study has highlighted how losing just 39 minutes of sleep in a night can impact children. As adults, we know just how much sleep affects our ability to go about our daily lives. What the researchers saw after one week of the children receiving 39 minutes less of sleep each night, was the children reporting lower overall wellbeing, and they also found it more difficult to cope at school. “Sleep is such a fundamental human requirement that, when it eludes us, it can have a negative impact on our day-to-day lives,” says hypnotherapist Angela Brown.

Just 39 minutes of lost sleep could impact your child's health, study shows
The kids who participated in the study regularly slept between eight and 11 hours a night and were considered generally healthy, the study said. The study covered many aspects of well-being, including an assessment of how the children felt physically, and psychologically, in their relationships with parents and peers, and how they felt about school, said Taylor, a research professor of medicine at the University of Otago in New Zealand. "Sometimes I think if we concentrated more on sleep, many other aspects of children's health and wellbeing would be greatly improved," Taylor said.
